Past Presidents
Bridgeton Burns Club

Our founder John Wilson was first President 1870-73 and he hosted the first supper at his grocers shop 13 Main Street Bridgeton. 1873-74 saw R G Dougal succeed him, then 1874-75 Dr John MacIntyre. Then as club became well known Baillie Alex Waddell was elected 1875-76 and the dinner was held in local halls such as Mechanics Institute. In 1876-77 Cllr Alex McLaren was President. In 1877-78 Dr A Neilson was elected President and in 1878-79 John Scott succeeded him and Club started to look at city centre hotels as a venue. In 1879-80 Rev William Leggatt was President, then in 1880-81 John Kirkland, then 1881-82 saw William MacIntyre as Prseident, followed by Dr Campbell in 1882-83. 1883-84 saw a John Burns a distant relative of the bard, whose great grand-daughters were living in south side of Glasgow, elected President. 1884-85 saw Cllr Hugh Thomson as President and 1885-86 saw John Dale elected President by which time our club was regularly holding its dinner in city centre hotels and having annual outings “doon the watter” to Clyde Resorts, Burns sites in Ayrshire and Spas in Stirlingshire and Perthshire.
